As some of you already know I'm in the process of simplifying my hobby. After many years of taking care of many tanks at the same time I have decided to "downgrade". My new tank is a 280g tank made by
Glasscages . The tank dimentions are 72"X 36"X 25". Eventually I will get rid of all my other tanks and extra equipment but I need to get this tank runnning first. I will keep my 120g RR which will be a softy tank and I will keep another smaller tank for zoanthids. These 2 tanks will also house some of my more aggressive fish that I don't want in the main display anymore. In total this ONE system will be about 600g. The main reef will be a mix of LPS, SPS and select softies which aren't invasive.
A few weekends ago I attended MACNA in Washington DC with some of my CMAS friends. That Saturday I was able to pick up the tank from the Glasscages truck. I was told the tank should weigh about 450lbs but no more then 500. I think everyone who lifted this tank will agree that it must be significantly more. Sunday morning before leaving for MACNA I had the help of Tom DiNoto (TomD), Mark Layng (ATTML), Ken Miller (miller), and Mike Hossom (mhossom). We figured that with 5 people it's less then 100lbs per person to lift. To say the least this was a very difficult task BUT we made it.
In preparation for recieving the tank I prebuilt the stand for it. This stand is constructed of 2X6 top choice lumber, 2 sheets of 3/4 AC plywood and 1/2 styrofoam. All the lumber is screwed together with special Deck Mate screws guaranteed never to rust. The stand sits 40" high on the left side and 42" high on the right side due to the slope of my old house. The basement is reinforced with three 2X6's bolted together and secured with 2 jack posts.
Here are some pics of the stand.
