Ready to replenish my clean up crew after massive death and destruction from vacation. My sand bed has a reddish brown layer going on right under the surface. What's the best creature for cleaning up this mess.

Sorry to hear this! What exactly died?
I would siphon clean the sand using a gravel cleaner first. This should be the first step.
Test for ammonia/ nitrate too. I would not add any type of clean up crew until you know these are at safe levels.
It's just money...go ahead, spend it.

Thanks for that advice but I'm past all that. Everything is back to normal and I need to re-inhabit now.

Nassarius snails do a great job of cleaning and keeping the sand bed stirred up. I have a tiger goby in my tank and he works constantly ... shifting sand and keeping it clean! He does like to have the sand deep enough for a hideaway borough ... so at least one area that is 2 inches of more deep keeps him happy!
You can tune a piano ... but you can't tune-a-fish!
