Tom DiNoto's 155 Bowfront
Introduction
This month we are featuring long time contributing member Tom Dinoto's (TomD) 155g bowfront. This tank is seperate from his "Big" system which many of us are familiar with. This tank is in the running for the oldest tank in CMAS award after 7 years! As a result of it's age it houses some impressive sized colonies! This system can be used as a model for other members wishing to set up a simple yet successful system. This system has been very successful using relatively simple technology to do so.
Overview
Equipment
- Main Tank: 155g Bowfront
- Sump: ~30g in stand houses all equipment.
- Skimmer:Euro Reef
- Water Movement:Modded MJ's and a Tunze powerhead
- Heater: Ebo Jager 250w.
- Lighting (display): 3x 250w XM 10k DE halides and 4x 26w power compact actinics
- Cooling:Wall mounted fan to encourage evaporative cooling
- Calcium Reactor:DIY built
- Top Off: Custom DIY with Kent float valve and MJ pump
- Controller: Manual timers
- Media Reactors Precision Marine Nilsen Rx.
- UV: Turbo Twist 18w UV
Lighting
Ligting consists of an Aquatinics metal halide and power compact combination fixture. The halide bulbs are XM 250w 10k's and the power compacts are used for actinic supplementation. Tom uses a timer to control the photoperiod.
Filtration
The system utilizes a simple sump design which houses the skimmer and reactors. The Euro Reef skimmer is the primary means of filtration with the rest left to the biological filter.
Temperature Control
Tom employs a Ebo Jager 250w heater to keep the temps up. Cooling is limited to evaporative means and is encouraged by a fan mounted adjacent to the tank
Circulation
In addition to the return, flow comes from several modified Maxi Jet powerheads.
Husbandry
Tom performs a 25% water change every 2-3 weeks.
Additives:
In between the water changes, Tom doses the tank weekly with Iodine and Magnesium
Feeding:
The fish are fed daily a mix of flake food and frozen..
